RIVES JUNCTION, MI — With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel of Detroit and the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, on Sunday, November 8, 2026, the 24th Sunday after Pentecost and the Feast of the Synaxis of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and All the Heavenly Powers, His Grace Bishop Andrei of Cleveland, Auxiliary Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, officiated the Holy and Divine Liturgy at the Dormition of the Birthgiver of God Romanian Orthodox Monastery in Rives Junction, Michigan.

Assisting His Grace at the Divine Liturgy were Very Rev. Fr. John W. Konkle, the monastery priest, together with visiting clergy, Hierodeacon Benedict Oancea of Vatra Românească in Grass Lake, Michigan, and Protodeacon Laike Misikir, the monastery deacon.

The feast also marked the namesday of Mother Gabriella (Ursache), Abbess of the monastery, who honors the Holy Archangel Gabriel as her heavenly protector. His Grace congratulated Mother Gabriella and wished her many blessed years, also conveying the greetings and good wishes of His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel.

The monastery’s history is rooted in the Romanian monastic tradition. In 1978, Mother Benedicta and Mother Gabriella came to the United States from Văratec Monastery in Romania, joining the community at Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Founded by Mother Alexandra, formerly Princess Ileana of Romania, that monastery provided a spiritual home where they could share their experience of Romanian monastic life while becoming acquainted with Orthodoxy in North America. They were later joined by Mother Apolinaria.

In 1987, with the blessing of then-Bishop Nathaniel, the three nuns left Ellwood City to establish a new monastic community, initially settling in Terre Haute, Indiana. After finding a suitable property in Rives Junction, Michigan, they began the work of establishing the present monastery. A former barn was transformed into a chapel, where the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated on July 20, 1988, the Feast of the Holy Prophet Elijah.

In the spring of 1989, Fr. Roman Braga joined the community as its spiritual father, while Mother Benedicta served as Abbess. On the Feast of the Dormition in 1992, Mother Gabriella was installed as the monastery’s second Abbess. The community continued to grow, and its present church, built in the Byzantine tradition, was consecrated on October 6, 2012.

Through its life of prayer, hospitality, spiritual guidance, and publishing, Dormition Monastery continues to share the riches of Orthodox monastic tradition with the faithful of many backgrounds, serving as a place of spiritual renewal within the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America.

Preasfințitul Părinte Andrei a săvârșit Sfânta Liturghie la Mănăstirea Adormirea Maicii Domnului din Rives Junction, Michigan

RIVES JUNCTION, MI — Cu binecuvântarea Înaltpreasfințitului Părinte Arhiepiscop Nathaniel de Detroit și al Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America, duminică, 8 noiembrie 2026, în Duminica a 24-a după Rusalii, la sărbătoarea Soborului Sfinților Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil și al tuturor cereștilor puteri, Preasfințitul Părinte Andrei de Cleveland, Episcop-Vicar al Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America, a săvârșit Sfânta și Dumnezeaisca Liturghie la Mănăstirea Ortodoxă Română Adormirea Maicii Domnului din Rives Junction, Michigan.

Alături de Preasfinția Sa au slujit PC. Pr.

Istoria mănăstirii își are rădăcinile în tradiția monahală românească.
